More Daguerreotypes...

These Husband and Wife daguerreotypes are a more recent addition to my collection.  They came in an elaborate double thermoplastic case missing its hinges.  Although the images have condition problems (mold spiders, scuffs), I think you will agree that they are of superior quality.

Both of the plates are marked with the stamp "NP=40" which indicates they were produced in France with an approximate date of 1849-1857.

New Arrival...

From the collection of John Rochon

Just received this wonderful cdv by George M. Howe of Portland, ME.  I like the way the elaborate backdrop in combination with the heavy drape and parlor chair add the perfect setting to the handsome young man in his Sunday Best.  I am fortunate to have an example of Mr. Howe's daguerreotype work in this nice 9th plate likeness of a bearded gentleman.

Micatypes

I don't know much about these photos, but from what I have found, Mica is a naturally occurring substance that is flexible and resembles plastic and seems almost indestructible.  I found these two photos in an carte de visite album I purchased a while back.

Although this photo resembles a tintype, it is thicker and quite flexible.  It almost seems that someone over the years had tried to destroy it, but it survives proving the durability of the micatype.

"The (above) studio was founded by Lorenzo Marvin Baker (1834-1924) who began working as a photographer in the early 1860′s and established the Baker Art Gallery in 1886. Four generations of the family ran the gallery until 1955. Many of their photographs and materials are now held by the Ohio Historical Society." - From the Blog: The Cabinet Card Gallery
